Cycle route improvements

Cyclists in Portsmouth will soon see an improved cycle route along parts of the A2047, as Portsmouth City Council continues its work to make cycling safer in the city.

The A2047 (Kingston Road, Fratton Road and London Road) sees the highest number of cyclist casualties in the city. In 2017 the council introduced a scheme to address the highest risk areas along the route, and now plans to continue work in the London Road area.

Between 11 March and 9 August, raised tables will be constructed and added to 14 junctions along the route. Raised tables improve safety as they force motorists to slow down when approaching the junction. Also as part of the scheme, the cycle path will be enhanced and junctions will be better highlighted to both cyclists and motorists.

Cllr Lynne Stagg, Portsmouth's Cabinet Member for Traffic and Transportation, said: "As the local highway authority, we have a commitment to improving road safety, particularly for vulnerable road users such as cyclists.

This scheme, along with the new tiger crossing in Fratton, demonstrates we are listening to cyclists and making improvements where we can."

The first six roads to have a raised table installed are: Kirby Road, Somers Road, Battenburg Avenue, Church Road, Clive Road and Merrivale Road. Work begins in Kirby Road and Somers Road on Monday 11 March until 29 March and 12 April respectively. During construction work roads will be closed to through traffic, with a signed diversion in place.
