Funding for city businesses to encourage walking and cycling

Air quality funding will make a breeze of walking or cycling for city employees

Portsmouth businesses have been invited to apply for funding to help encourage walking and cycling in the city.

Portsmouth City Council is offering local businesses the opportunity to apply for up to £2,000 through its Workplace Sustainable Travel Fund. The funding will help organisations support employees who choose to walk or cycle to work, or for business trips, by purchasing new bike storage and lockers, for example, or improving existing shower facilities.

Cllr Lynne Stagg, Cabinet Member for Traffic and Transport, said: "The most significant source of air pollution in Portsmouth is from road traffic, whether that's from people travelling to and from work, shopping, dropping children at school or from businesses making essential trips and deliveries.  I'm really pleased that this funding will allow us to help small businesses to promote more sustainable travel to employees, for their daily commute or for business trips. As well as supporting our aim of improving local air quality, this scheme offers great benefits for employees' health and wellbeing."

The council applied for funding from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' (DEFRA) Air Quality Grant and was successfully awarded £450,000. The Workplace Sustainable Travel Fund is one of many schemes the council has introduced to reduce pollution levels and improve air quality.

Successful businesses will be notified on 19 October 2018.
